“God is Love: Let Heav’n Adore Him” pairs a text by the Welsh Anglican bishop Timothy Rees (1874-1939) with the 19th-century American hymn tune BEACH SPRING, attributed to Benjamin Franklin White (1800-1979), compiler and editor of the influential Sacred Harp hymnal.
Quick to rehearse, yet satisfying to perform and moving in its effect on listeners, this lovely anthem expresses assurance in God’s boundless love, from His creation of the world (v. 1) to His love for “ev’ry child of ev’ry race” (v. 2) to His ultimate triumph over sin and death. Mostly unison (women, men, and all voices combined), with some 3-part harmony at the peak of the concluding verse.
