An American Folk Hymn Medley

A fresh setting of three nineteenth-century tunes from the shape-note singing tradition, “An American Folk Hymn Medley” includes:

  • HOLY MANNA, published in “Columbian Harmony” in 1829 and attributed to its publisher, William Moore (ca. 1790-1850).
  • RESTORATION, aka ARISE, published in William Walker’s (1809-1875) “Southern Harmony” in 1835.
  • PLEADING SAVIOR, composed by Joshua Leavitt (1794-1873) and published in his hymnal, “The Christian Lyre,” in 1831.

Throughout, “An American Folk Hymn Medley” features engaging melodies, attractive harmonies, a variety of contrasts, and numerous opportunities for musical expression.
