All Things Bright and Beautiful

Although the Irish hymn-writer Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) wrote most of her more than 400 hymns for children, several — “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” “Once in Royal David’s City,” “There is a Green Hill Far Away” — are beloved by people of all ages worldwide.

Alexander wrote a number of hymns on articles of the Apostles’ Creed, and “All Things Bright and Beautiful” is an exposition of the article “Maker of Heaven and Earth.” Published in Hymns for Little Children (1848) and set to the English traditional tune “Royal Oak,” Alexander’s hymn is a cheerful acknowledgment of God’s goodness and pre-eminence as Creator of all things.
